Environmental fact sheet
-
By the end of 2011 State Transit will have introduced over 650 new low-emission compressed natural gas (CNG) and diesel buses into its fleet of over 2100 buses.
-
Catching public transport is one of the most environmentally-friendly forms of transport (see table below).
- The above graph was sourced from the former Australian Greenhouse Office.
- Even driving a fuel-efficient small car produces several times more greenhouse gas emissions than catching an existing bus service.
- State Transit was the first bus operator in the southern hemisphere to introduce low-emission ‘Euro 5’ buses into its fleet.
- Changes in diesel engine technology combined with exhaust emission controls have produced significant reductions in tailpipe emissions, with a greater than 90% reduction in particle emissions from ‘Euro 1’ heavy vehicles to ‘Euro 5’ heavy vehicles.
- Each bus trip has the potential to take around 50 cars off the road.
- Retrofitting ‘old’ diesel buses with emission control devices will reduce gaseous air pollutants and particulate emissions for the remainder of their operational life.
